The Athletics & the Orioles squared off on Memorial Day for the exclusive
right to play on Championship Saturday. This was a well-played game with plenty
of tournament atmosphere.
Game summary: · The Orioles came out swinging and immediately put two runs on
the scoreboard with hits from Robert Mace, Jay Davis and Matthew Carter. The Athletics
bounced back in the bottom of the first and tied the game with hits from Peyton
Kinman, Weston McDonald and Zach Cooter.
· The Orioles scored again in the top of the second and pulled ahead 4 to 2 when
Jay Davis singled again to bring Robert Mace and Hayden Brown across home plate.
The Athletics bats came alive in the second and managed to retake the lead with
a hard hit ball into deep center by Capers Foster. This hit changed the momentum
of the game and allowed the A’s to retake the lead 6 to 4. Those A’s crossing
the plate in the fourth included : Peyton Kinman, Weston McDonald, Michael Stone
& Capers.
· The 3rd inning belonged to the Orioles as they put two more runs on the scoreboard
with hits from Mathew Carter, Connor Whitlock and Andrew Vail to tie that game
at 6 all.
· The fourth inning was scoreless for both teams & proved to be a pitchers
duel. Peyton returned to the mound in the top of the 4th & was eventually
relieved by Zach Cooter. Zach pitched another stellar game and shut the Orioles
down with blazing fastballs. The A’s tried to rally their bats again, but Mathew
Carter shut them down & recorded three more KO’s for the evening.
· Zach returned to the mound for the Athletics & held the Orioles scoreless
in the 5th with some defensive help from first baseman Nate Edenfield. Hammering
Nate pulled off a solo double play after catching a line drive at first and then
beating the runner back to the bag. The Athletics managed to retake the lead with
a lead off double from Peyton Kinman, followed by a hard hit single from Zach
Cooter. Zach’s single into right center helped the A’s pull ahead 7 to 6 &
brought in what would turn out to be the winning run.
· Zach returned to the mound in the top of the 6th and pitched another fabulous
inning. The top of the 6th passed quickly as Zach recorded 2 more KO’s and helped
the home team Athletics advance to Championship Saturday with a 7 to 6 win over
the Orioles.
· The Orioles played a fantastic game and the Athletics wish them the best of
luck throughout the tournament. |

~ Playing their second consecutive heart-stopper, the Majors regular season champion
Cardinals completed the fast track to Championship Saturday with a 3-2 win over
the A’s.
~ The Cards knew going in that they would be facing A’s legend Glenn Batson,
one of the top pitchers in all of Little League, and that they would have to scratch
and claw for any and every run. They were correct. Not only was Batson in top
form as evidenced by his stat sheet (5 IP, 4 hits, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts), but
he was backed by one of GLL’s most improved defenses. The Cards managed to squeeze
out one run in the first inning when Will Robertson reached on a fielder’ choice,
stole second, then aggressively worked his way home on a pair of passed balls.
In the second, Preston Hall unflinchingly took a Batson heater in the back for
a free pass to first, and promptly converted the opportunity into a run with heads-up
base-running. The Cards final run, which would prove to be the winner, came in
the third: Brooks Brady reached on his second straight single up the line, stole
his way to third, then scored on an infield RBI single by Robertson.
~ For the undefeated Cards to win this type of game, they would need exceptional
pitching AND fielding. They got both. Brooks Brady showed once again why he’s
known among informed GLL fans as a “gamer.” In only his third start of the season,
Brady was spectacular, pitching a complete 6-inning game in 81 pitches while striking
out 8 batters and walking only one. He was supported by the outfielders, including
big-time fifth inning catches by Philip Bryant and Devon Ciufo. He also got help
from the infield, with key late-inning plays by shortstop Robertson and first
baseman Mattox Snow. The A’s big inning came in the 3rd, when they scored two
runs off a barrage of singles by Moore Lockman, Noah Lindsay, Mason Simmons, and
Bryan Poe. Fortunately for Brady and the Cards, they were able to escape the onslaught
without further damage and hold the A’s scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
~ The Cards will now watch with great interest to see which of the remaining
“Final Four” Majors teams will emerge from the ‘one-loss’ bracket. Will it be
the Cubs or the Marlins, who meet one another on Tuesday? … Or will the A’s bounce
back in semi-final action on Wednesday to set up a rematch. All three teams are
most deserving. It will be fun watching it all unfold. No matter what, the Championship
promises to be a classic. |

The Cardinals and A’s squared off Tuesday afternoon in another CP elimination
game. The visiting Cards got things going in the top of the 1st sending 10 batters
to the plate and scoring 5 runs behind the hard hits of AJ Quartararo (2/5, HR,
1 run), Beau Thompson (5/5, 4 runs), Will Williamson (5/5, 5 runs) and Walker
Falls (3/4, 2 runs). The A’s, not to be out done, sent 10 of their own to the
plate in the bottom of the 1st and posted 6 runs. Leading the way at the plate
for the A’s were Sam Macfie (3/3, 3 runs), Tom Freeland (3/3, 3 runs), Read Perkins
(3/3, 1 run) and Will Turrentine (2/3, 2 runs). Both defenses settled down in
the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings keeping scoring to a minimum behind solid infield
play and aggressive outfielders. The A’s started the fireworks again in the bottom
of the 5th with 10 batters going to the plate and 9 runs scoring, capped off by
a HR from Austin McCalla down the left field line. The Cardinals, down 14-17 going
into the 6th, never gave up and scored 8 runs in the sixth. The second half of
the order set the stage for the Cardinals with Marshall Gilmer, Mark McEvoy, Parker
Wingate and Thomas Williams all getting hits and scoring. Great season by the
Athletics. The Cardinals visit the Marlins on Wednesday for their third elimination
game. |

The Marlins trying to defend a #1 seed in the Tourney after loosing their 1st
round game have been on a small roll but knew that tonights game against the Cards
who have had a great run in the Tournament would not be easy. It was very tight
through the first 3 innings with the scored notted at 3. The Cards bat 1st and
with great pitching from Bryce Reeves(complete game) the Cards only were able
to get 1 runner on base when Lucas Coan pulled the ball to right and tripled.
Reeves answered with a so and got out of the inning unscaved. The Marlins struck
quick in their at bat with Bryce Reeves(2-3 2 runs)hit the ball to left, then
Mitchell Bryant(2-3)hit the ball hard to left followed by hits from Walker Carroll(3-3)and
Atticus Lindsey(2-3) to take a 3-0 lead. The Cards needing to answer back got a
hit from Cannon Few(2-3 1 run)then later scores on a great hit from Matthew Farish
making the score 3-1.John Toohey who had a great night shut down the Marlins with
a 1-2-3 inning. The Cards with that momentum the rallied when Bonner Snyder had
a hit to left followed by another big hit from Coan and both scored to tie the
game at 3.The Marlins feeling the pressure tuned up their bats with the top of
the lineup coming to bat. Ian Miller reached with a hit to left. Rudy Johnstone
then tripled to deep left. Bryant hit his 2nd double to score Johnstone. Carroll
had a hard hit to right and eventually scored on Wyatt Meadors infield hit(who
by the way has a 4 game hit streak going). This gave the Marlins a little breathing
room with the score now 7-3.The Cards tried to rally around Few but Reeves dug
deep and struck out the side with 2 so in the inning. The Marlins the added some
insurance runs with the top of the lineup again doing the job with Miller,Reeves,Johnstone, and
Bryant(3-3 3 runs scored,2 dbls)all scoring.Also Carroll and Lindsey added more
RBIS to their night making t he score 11-3.The Cards needing some runs got Jake
Garland on base when he took one for the team, the Snyder got another hit to left,
but the Marlins with a great defensive play at the plate by Bryant kept the Cards
from scoring. The Marlins in the 5th went down 1-2-3 with a great performance by
relief pitcher Bonner Snyder. Could the Cards, with their magical run in the Tourney
make a comeback. The Marlins only needing an out to end the game got it in the
2nd batter of the inning to secure the win. Reeves pitched a complete game with
4 so and allowed only 3 runs. Great job Cards on your run. Marlins keep the BIG
MO on your side. |

by Michael Spiers, a double by Borowicz and a double by Rich Milligan. The Marlins

In the final elimination game before Championship Saturday, the A's and Cubs
faced off with neither team wanting their season to come to an end. The Cubs brought
their hot bats again along with a solid pitching effort from Mac Ellison to earn
their way to Saturday. In the first, Ellison made quick work of the A's recording
one strike out and 2 ground outs to third. The hot hitting Cubs responded in the
botton of the first with 3 runs after their first 5 batters reached base safely.
Leadoff hitter, Garrett Keller coaxed a walked, Michael Spiers followed with a
double to leftcenter, Robert Borowicz singled up the middle, Ellison singled and
Jaime Connor singled. Ellison conitnued his early inning success getting 3 more
quick outs in the top of the second and the Cubs added one more run in the bottom
half on back to back doubles by Spiers and Borowicz. Martin Pazdan leadoff the
3rd with a walk for the A's and scored their first run on a solid base hit to
right by catcher, Mason Simmons. Davis Callaham kept the Cubs scoreless in the
3rd despite a leadoff ground rule double by Connor and a single by Jordan Ford.
In the 4th, Glenn Batson leadoff with a homerun to left center to cut the Cubs
lead in half but good defensive plays by the Cub's infielders kept the A's from
gaining any momentum. In the bottom of the 4th and after hitting 3 balls off the
fence in the past 3 games, Borowicz hit his first homerun of the season to give
the Cubs a 3 run lead heading into the 5th. Another 1-2-3 inning by Ellison in
the top of the 5th allowed the Cubs to come to bat in the bottom of the 5th when
they scored 7 runs to earn the win. Ford singled to right, Ash Harward walked,
Rich Milligan doubled to right scoring Ford and Harward, Jack Cottingham singled,
Keller singled, Spiers reached on a fielder's choice, Borowicz doubled of the
fence for his fourth hit of the night, Ellison singled and Connor drove in Ellison
for the 10 run victory. The 6th seeded A's and 5th seeded Cubs both proved that
anything can happen in the tournament with both teams playing great baseball late
in the season. Congrats to both teams on a well played season with great sportsmanship
throughout the regular season and tournament. The Cubs and Cardinals will play
the final game of the 2007 season on Championship Saturday. |

Athletics 5 Orioles 3 |
The Athletics & the Orioles played again on Championship Saturday to decide
which team would leave Timmons as the division champs. Both teams played like
champions, but the Athletics took the game in six with a 5 to 3 victory over the
Orioles. Matthew Carter pitched another fantastic game for the Orioles & recorded
9 KO’s before being relieved in the 6th by Jay Davis. Catcher Ashe Macfie and
infielders Jay Davis, Carter Powell & Andrew Vail, led the Orioles defense.
The Orioles played a great game & generated their runs with key hits from
Andrew Vail & Connor Whitlock. Peyton Kinman took the mound for the Athletics,
went four innings, recorded 4 KO’s and held the Orioles to just 1 run before being
relieved by Weston McDonald. Jake Dill caught the entire game and helped hold
the Orioles to just two stolen bases. Bruce Stephenson was the lead off batter
for the Athletics and set the tone of the game by slamming a hard hit single through
the infield. The Athletics scored in the bottom of the 1st when Zach Cooter singled
to bring Bruce across home plate. The Athletics were silenced in the second inning,
but did manage to score two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd with singles from
Weston McDonald & Zach Cooter. Bruce Stephenson scored again in the 3rd along
with Capers Foster to help the Athletics take a 3 to 0 lead. The 4th inning was
scoreless & it looked like the Orioles had silenced the A’s bats until the
bottom of the 5th when Bruce Stephenson hammered a triple down the 3rd base line
to put himself in scoring position. Peyton brought Bruce home with a single and
then crossed home plate with another base hit from Weston McDonald. The Orioles
threatened again in the top of the 6th by scoring 2 more runs and narrowing the
A’s lead to just 2 runs. With two outs, first baseman Nate Edenfield caught the
game-winning ball to help the A’s earn the division title. Congratulations to
the runner up Orioles for a great season and game. The roster of the division
champions includes: Bruce Stephenson, Reese Wilson, Capers Foster, Zach Cooter,
Weston McDonald, Peyton Kinman, Nate Edenfield, Jake Dill, Brooks Quartararo &
Michael Stone. Finally, we would like to say thanks to our team mom, Amy Cooter,
and all of the parents for their support and spirit throughout the year. |

Cardinals 10 Cubs 0 |
~ In the feature game on Championship Saturday, the Cardinals completed the Spring
‘07 Greenville Little League season with a 10-0 victory over the Cubs. The Cards
earned the win as they have all season, with a lethal combination of stellar pitching,
shut-down defense, and heavy sticks through the order. Offensively, nine different
Cards reached base (including 9 base hits) and 8 different Cardinals crossed home
plate. Defensively, the Cardinals were able to retire 12 of the 13 Cubs batters
that came up to the plate. ~ The Cards’ magical season featured many milestones.
They posted a perfect 12-0-0 regular season record followed by a clean 3-game
sweep through the playoffs for a perfect 15-0 final record. In their 15 games
this spring, the Cards defense allowed only 31 combined runs and recorded 6 shutouts.
Congratulations to the Majors Champion Cardinals: Brooks Brady, Philip Bryant,
Taylor Carsten, Dixon Collins, Devon Ciufo, Matthew Davis, Preston Hall, Tom Kent,
Will Robertson, and Mattox Snow. ~ The Cubs have every right to be equally proud,
having made an enormous statement in the postseason by winning 4 playoff games
(including 3 consecutive elimination games) in their remarkable run to Championship
Saturday; and having put up a staggering 62 runs in those four playoff wins for
a Coaches Pitch-like 15.5 runs-per-game average! Congratulations to the Majors
