2007 Spring Baseball Season
Greenville, SC
Game Reports
Week 1 - March 12-18
The Tigers and Giants started the 2007 GLL Season with a barn burner on a beautiful
springlike afternoon. It was truly a game where the team able to push the most
players across the plate was going to win. Although the Tigers prevailed 18 -
17, the game was in doubt until Tigers SS John David Terry made an unassisted
play at second base to end a Giants 4-run rally in the bottom of the 5th inning
for the final out of the game. Both teams played typical early season CP baseball
-- relying on hitting, base running and the other team's over anxious defenses
to scratch out a lot of runs. The see-saw battle had many great highlights, including
great defensive plays by the Giants' Gill Sizer and Alex Brown and the Tigers'
Tucker Shaw and Sam Jones. In addition, the Tiger outfield saw plenty of action
with great stops being made in the corners by Christopher Riley, Denton Knox,
and Jack Johnson. Leading the way at the plate for the Tigers was leadoff hitter,
Matt Ninneman who went 4 for 4 and scored 4 runs. Other big hitters for the Tigers
included Jack Jopling (3/4 and 3 runs), Tucker Shaw (3/4 and 3 runs), John David
Terry (3/4 and 2 runs), Brooks Lucas (3/3 and 1 run), Denton Knox (3/4 and 1 run)
and Sam Jones (3/3 and 1 run). The Giants countered with big plate performances
by Dixon Douglas, Gill Sizer, and Wilson Smith, all going 4 for 4 and Hunter Balck
going 3 for 3. Reaching base 3 out of 4 times for the Giants were Jeffrey Johnson,
Will Phillips, Liam Early, and Alex Brown.

the Giants a 3-0 lead then scored on a past ball to make the score 4-0 at the
end of the third. In the fourth inning the Marlins picked up one run in the top

In the second CP game of the GLL season, the Orioles were able to score six runs
in the top of the first on eight hits and base clearing triples by Clark Kistler
(3-3, 1 HR & 3 runs) and Steven Cain! The Cards would answer with three runs
after hits by Beau Thompson (1-2, 1 run) and Will Williamson (2-2, 1 run) and
a towering home run to the right field fence by Reid Johnstone (2-2, HR &
1 run). The Orioles offense would continue to hit the ball hard in the second
and score 6 runs on eight hits led by home runs by Robert Luce (2-3, 1 HR), William
Luce (3-3, 2 Doubles, 1HR & 3 runs) and Clark Kistler. The Orioles and Cards
defense would take over the rest of the game and limit the scoring for each team
to 3 runs in the last two innings. The Orioles were lead by excellent play from
pitcher William Luce, first baseman Hudson Davis and second baseman Robert Luce.
The Cards were led by pitcher Will Williamson, second baseman Marshall Gilmer
and first baseman Beau Thompson. Orioles award winners were Miles Watson-Hustle,
Robert Luce-Defense, Shaler Smith-Tough man and the entire team-Big Bat. Great
game by both teams! Good luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
Great pitching and exciting defense by both teams kept this game close until
the end. The starting pitchers (Cubs' Patrick Henry and Cardinals' Lucas Coan)
threw their limits and pitched great. With the Cardinals leading 2-1 after 3 innings,
the Cubs picked up 2 runs in the 4th and 3 runs in the 5th with with big RBI hits
by Krae Baumgardner and Alex Mahaffey (triple and 2 RBI's). Krae's strong hit
to the fence was quickly relayed to home plate by the Cardinals and Bobby Hudson
made a great tag to prevent Krae's home run. The Cubs Harrison Stall came off
the injured reserve (broken arm) today and had two singles at the plate. Justin
Bailey came in as relief pitcher in the 5th to save the win for P. Henry. Great
game by both teams.

and held on by their fingernails to eek out a 6-5 victory.

GLL debut, delivering 3 hits for the Cards out of the cleanup spot.

The Cards were able to escape further damage thanks in large part to two textbook

-
Collins drove in Snow in the 3rd to put the Cards ahead 4-2, and the score stayed
that way until the fifth.
-
After the Cards posted two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Cubs rallied

Athletics 14 Giants 8
The Athletics and Giants tangled in the season opener for the A's in a game that
started with offensive fireworks then settled down to a tight defensive duel.
After two leadoff groundouts to Giants first baseman Dixon Douglas, the A's bounced
back with 7 straight hits and five runs behind hustle-singles by Thomas Whatley
(2 for 4), Read Perkins (4 for 4, 2 RBIs, 3 runs), Edward Pollack (3 for 3), Thomas
Slade, Will Turrentine, and Austin McCalla (4 for 4, 2 runs), wrapped around a
laser-shot triple by clean-up hitter Tom Freeland (4 for 4, 4 runs). The Giants
then matched the A's hot-hitting with consecutive singles from leadoff man Alex
Brown, Jeffrey Johnson (2 for 3) and Dixon Douglas (2 for 3, 2 runs) who were
chased home by Gill Sizer's (2 for 3, 2 runs) clean-up triple. Will Phillips (2
for 3) then singled for the sixth straight hit to plate the fourth run before
the A's defenders got their opening-game jitters under control, giving up just
one more run to close out a wild 1st inning at 5-5. The A's bats rebounded in
the top of the 2nd as leadoff speedster Andres Garcia (3 for 4, game-ball) and
Sam Macfie singled and were chased home by Tom Freeland's second straight hit
and steady Edward Pollock delivered another RBI to stake the A's to an 8-5 lead.
Defense then dominated the rest of the game as the A's posted shutout innings
in the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th, spoiled only by a 3-run outburst by the heart of
the Giants batting order in the 3rd, with Douglas, Sizer and Phillips singling
and scoring on RBIs by Trey Key and daring baserunning to make the game 9-8 A's.
The A's offense scratched out insurance runs in the 3rd behind hits by McCalla
and John Price (2 for 3) and in the 4th with RBIs by Perkins, Pollock and Slade,
despite scrappy defense by Giants Liam Easley, Hunter Balck, Talmadge Bakker (2
for 2), Charles McKissick and Ben Martin. The A's stellar defense then held steady
with 6 up / 6 down in the 5th and 6th with catcher Julian Espada permitting no
runners to cross home, aided by first baseman Sam Macfie's 5 putouts, highlighted
by two unassisted groundouts to first, ending the game with a 14-8 A's win in
the bottom of the 6th inning. Congratulations to both teams on a game with heavy
hitting early and stingy defense late!
The Athletics arrived at Timmons to play the Giants and both teams were looking
for a win to open their season.
GAME RECAP & HIGHLIGHTS:
- Blazing Hank Nichols took the mound for the Giants and held the A’s to just two
runs. Peyton Kinman singled in the first to give the A’s their only hit of the
inning. Zach Cooter drew a walk and both eventually crossed home to give the Athletics
a 2 to 0 lead. Blazing Hank was spectacular and recorded 3 KO’s in the 1st to
retire the Athletics. Zach Cooter pitched for the visiting Athletics, recorded
1 strike out in the first and received some defensive help from second baseman
Jake Dill to hold the Giants scoreless.
- John Bowman took the mound for the Giants in the 2nd, held the A’s scoreless
& recorded 2 KO’s. Zach Cooter returned to the mound for the A’s, recorded
2 more KO’s and was relieved by Peyton Kinman to assist with shutting the Giants
down again & record his first of 4 KO’s for the evening.
- The Athletics only managed to pick 1 more run up in the 3rd, but pulled away
in the 4th after putting 5 runs on the score board with help from Weston McDonald
1 for 3 ( 1 triple & 2 RBI’s) & Nate Edenfield 2 for 3 with (1 single,
1 double & 3 RBI’s.) Bruce Stephenson stole two bases in the 5th and eventually
crossed home plate with Capers Foster to give the Athletics a 10 to 0 win over
the Giants.
- The Giants threatened to score several times during the game with base hits
from Hank Nichols, Will Wyncoop, & Drennan Quattlebaum. The Giants bats came
alive several times during the night, but they were denied any runs with great
defensive plays from Michael Stone, Jake Dill & Zach Cooter.

In the season opener for both teams, the Tigers pulled away late to edge the
A's. It was obvious from the start that the fans were in for some great pitching.
A's ace Glenn Batson was his usual, intimidating self striking out 12 Tigers into
the 5th frame. Sam Jones went the distance for the Tigers striking out nine while
only giving up two hits and one walk. Down the stretch, the Tigers defense in
support of masterful pitching made the difference. Scoring summary: A's - Jackson
Arnold (1). Tigers - Rob Frasher (2), Evan Smith (2), Sam Jones (1), McKenzie
Carter (1), and Alston Mickel (1).

Athletics 12 Marlins 8
The Athletics hosted the Marlins on Saturday morning in a tight, well-planned
game, despite the 35-degree cold, the rising sun in the batter's eyes early, and
those pesky St. Patrick's Day leprechauns. The Marlins struck early with two runs
in the 1st behind big hits and hustling baserunning by Keyton Daniels and Luke
Nichols (2 for 3, 2 runs), then shut down the A's in the bottom of the frame with
one run after two-out hits by third batter Read Perkins, cleanup man Tom Freeland
(3 for 3, 2 runs) and hot-hitting Thomas Whatley (2 for 3, 2 runs). The A's defense,
anchored by SS Will Turrentine, SF Edward Pollock, P Tom Freeland and 1B Sam Macfie,
chased away their 1st inning defensive butterflies with 6 outs against 7 batters
in the Marlins' 2nd and 3rd innings, as the A's built a 6-3 lead after three with
strong hitting and smart baserunning by Turrentine (2 for 3, 2 runs), Thomas Slade,
Reid Johnstone (2 for 3, 2 runs) and continued offensive firepower from Freeland
and Whatley. The "Fighting Fish" rallied for 6 runs in their own offensive explosion
in the 4th and 5th behind heavy hitting by Jack Sanders, Chrestman Rainey, Hunter
McMillan (2 for 3, 2 runs), Harrison Wood, Joshua Evans and Jordan Morgan. The
never-say-die A's then struck back to reclaim a 12-8 lead behind clutch hits and
hustle on the basepaths by Austin McCalla, Edward Pollock, Freeland and Whatley.
They then played their patented "Straight As" defense in the top of the 6th behind
rocket throws to 1st by Freeland and "Good Hands" catches by Macfie to preserve
the A's win in a well-played game by both squads. A tip of the A's caps to the
CP-Cards who played Saturday's second game for the callover of Reid Johnstone,
replacing two sick Athletics (Get well quick, Jennings and Julian!) and slugger
John Price who was on a special trip with his Dad!
The Cubs opened their season against the visiting Cardinals on a brisk Saturday
morning. The Cardinals were led with big hits by AJ Quartararo and Beau Thompson
(3 for 3 with 3 runs scored) during the top of the 1st inning. The Cubs were led
by Austin Hall (3 for 3), Matthew Mahaffey (2 for 3) and Conrad Pentaleri (2 for
3). After the 1st inning the Cubs led 3 to 2. The Cardinal’s Walker Falls got
a hit in the top of the 2nd which proved to be the only run scored in the 2nd
inning. After 2 innings the game was all tied up 3 to 3. Beau Thompson scored
1 run in the 3rd inning for the Cardinals and then the Cubs bats came alive in
the bottom of the 3rd inning with big hits by Zachary Idris (2 for 3), Bradley
Hughes (2 for 3) and Fletcher Mazzola. The Cubs managed 4 runs on 5 hits in the
bottom of the 3rd making the score 7 to 4, Cubs lead. The last two innings were
highlighted by great defensive plays by the Cardinals Will Williamson at pitcher
and Marshall Gilmer at 2nd base. The Cubs defense played great the entire game
which included great plays by Austin Hall, Matthew Mahaffey and Conrad Pentaleri.
The defensive play of the game went to Cub’s Zachary Idris for protecting the
plate and preventing 2 Cardinal runs from scoring.
The Tigers and the Giants squared off on Saturday with hard throwing LH Hank
Nichols taking the mound for the Giants. The Tigers got things started with Wes
Reeves and Carson Spiers getting on base and scoring the games first two runs.
Wilson Strausbaugh then took the mound for the Tigers and got the Giant out after
only 4 batters. The 3rd inning again proved productive for the Tigers scoring
6 runs highlighted by Chase Poplin hitting an inside the park home run. The Giants
picked up 1 run in the 2nd and another in the 3rd keeping it close at 8-3 Tigers.
The Giants held the Tigers scoreless in the 4th with good pitching by Carter Jay
and Drennan Quattelbaum. The bottom of the 4th Neil Satterfield took over on the
mound and did an excellent job holding the Giants to only 1 run to cut the lead
to 8-4 Tigers. The top of the 5th the Tigers put an additional 5 runs across the
plate with Thomas Lister, Jack McEvoy, Aubrie Lauderdale, Worth Gentry, Tudor
Malik and Will Taylor getting base hits scoring 5 additional runs to give the
Tigers a 13-4 win. Both teams played a great game and good luck to the Giants
the rest of the season. Congratulations Tigers.

On a blustery St. Patrick's Day at Timmons Park, the Tigers defeated the Giants.
The luck of the Irish seemed to be with the Giants early as they jumped to a three-run
lead after one. But after a rocky start, Tigers ace Evan Smith settled down and
held the Giants scoreless for the rest of the game. In the top of the second,
the Tigers bats heated up resulting in two runs and a shift in momentum. In the
4th, Tigers first baseman Enrique Cardoza crushed the ball out of Timmons Park

In the second game for both teams this season, the Cubs defense started off hot
holding the Orioles to 2 runs in the first two innings led by solid play from
Austin Hall, Matthew Mahaffey and Conrad Pentaleri. The Orioles produced 2 runs
in the first led on hits by Kristopher Sally (4-4), Clark Kistler (4-4, 4 runs),
Steven Cain (2-4) and Banks Gaines (3-3, 2 runs). The Cubs bats came alive in
the second as they scored 5 runs and sent ten players to the plate. After a lead
off hit by Zachery Idris, Cubs batters…Drew Cunningham Erik Rolfe, Dolan Foster
and Mills Chastain made contact to kick off the rally! Hall, Mahaffey, Merrit
Grace and Pentaleri would finish off the great inning. The Orioles bats would
come alive in the 3rd and 4th to score six runs in each inning, and the defense
would excel the rest of the game and not allow any runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th
innings. The Orioles were lead by excellent play from the middle infield combo
of Lee Hudson and Kristopher Sally. Orioles award winners were Miles Watson-Big
Bat, Steven Cain-Toughman Lee Hudson and Kristopher Sally-Defense, Michael Wolfe-Hustle.
Thanks to Shaler Smith for showing up in full uniform to cheer on his teammates
from the dugout even tough he was unable to play because of a broken finger! Great
game by both teams! Good luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
Cubs 8 Orioles 7
It was March Madness GLL style with this nailbiter game being decided in the
7th inning!!!!!! The Orioles, Matthew Carter shutdown the Cubs for the first three
innings but the Cubs never gave up and scored four runs in the 4th to even the
game at four. With the game tied and both starting pitchers getting relief in
the fifth, the excitement began. With the Orioles needing a run to win in the
bottom of the sixth, the Cubs made a bases loaded double play to end the inning.
The Cubs picked up a run in the seventh on a double from J Bailey and the Cubs'
E Gilmer calmly faced the top of Oriloes order in the bottom half of the inning.
The Cubs made two quick outs while the third out was a diving pop fly catch by
W Chandler at catcher!! J Davis and R Mace went 2-4 for the Orioles while P Henry
and W Chandler led the offense for the Cubs. Great game by both teams.

Orioles 6 Cubs 4
In the makeup game from Friday’s rain out the Orioles were able to top a short
staffed Cubs squad 6-4. Starting pitcher for the O’s was Andrew Carter (9K) who
was able to retire the side in the first with bases loaded and only one out.
The O’s jumped up quickly with 5 runs in the first beginning with a lead off first
pitch bunt single by catcher Jake Mace and exceptional base running by the twin
threat speedsters Jordan and Peter O’Steen. The Cubs call up Carson Spires put
the Visitors on the board in the second with a gutsy steal of home. Veteran stopper
Michael Spires entered to retire the side with the score at 5-1 at the end of
two. The highlight play of the inning was a cannon throw (of the Howitzer variety)
from CF Carson Spires to C Mac Ellison for a bang-bang tag out at home after a
rip shot (also of the Howitzer variety) from O’s Brandon Hood. After quickly
retiring the Cubbies in the top of the third, the O’s put up an insurance run
to lead 6-1 heading into the fourth. O’s Benton Stilwell almost padded the lead
with a long bomb to left field that tailed foul as it crossed the fence. With
a Cub’s runner on first and one out, O’s reliever Hood entered the game to attempt
the save. The Cub’s were not to go down without a fight, as call up Jay Davis
poked a single to right center and Mac Ellison posting a two RBI double to have
tying runners in scoring position before the side was retired. Special thanks
to the GLL umpiring team for their long day at Timmons on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
