Defensive highlights were from shortstop Connor Whitlock for a great 6-3 putout to first baseman Jay Davis, an awesome throw-out by catcher Ashe Macfie to Whitlock to prevent a stolen base, and a great pop fly catch by Jay Davis in foul territory. In the 2nd inning the O’s managed to get 3 more runs, led by a single from Rhett Baker (1-2, 1 Run), walks for Hayden Brown (1 Run) and Matthew Carter, and a base clearing double by Jay Davis to give the O’s a six-run lead. In the top of the 3rd, the Giants managed to get 4 base runners on walks, but the O’s defense held the Giants from coming home with yet another great throw from catcher Ashe Macfie to Whitlock for a 2-6 out to prevent a stolen base, a strikeout by Matthew Carter, and a pop fly catch with the sun in his eyes by second baseman Carter Powell. The O’s then were held scoreless because of great relief pitching from Ben Smith. Tigers 17   Marlins 16
In the first of two meetings this week between the Tigers and the Marlins, the teams thrilled the fans with a see-saw battle that included 5 home runs. While the Tigers ultimately prevailed 17 - 16, this game featured everything two evenly matched teams could muster. The heart attack kids (aka Tigers) were staring at an 8-0 deficit after the first Marlins at bat but managed to close to within 10 - 7 after 2 innings. The Marlins would push across more runs in every inning and after 4 1/2, it was 16 - 8, Marlins. The Tiger bats exploded in the 5th when 10 batters were sent to the plate without the Marlins recording an out. A sterling defensive stand by the Tigers in the top of the 6th allowed strongman Jack Jopling to lead off the 6th with a tie score. Jop delivered a walk-off home run to complete his day at the plate where he batted for the cycle. The Marlins had lots of big hitters: Grant Hall (4-4, HR); Reynolds McLeod (3-4); Luke Nichols (3-3, HR); Keyton Daniels (3-3); Harrison Wood (2-3) Jack Sanders (2-3); Jordan Morgan (3-3); and Joshua Evans (2-3). In addition, Keyton Daniels had 3 assist from 3rd. In addition to Jack Jopling's 4 for 4 day for the Tigers, other hitters included John David Terry (2-3); Tucker Shaw (2-3, with a tape measure HR); Jack Strausbaugh (3-3, HR); Christopher Riley (2-3); Sam Jones (3-3); and Wilson Smith (2-3). In addition, every Tiger infielder had an assist on a putout. Thursday's re-match promises to be a barn burner.

Tigers 11  Cardinals 4

The Tigers started slow against Cannon Few taking to the mound for the Cards getting only 1 batter on base in the first. Wilson Strausbaugh then took control shutting the Cards down for 3 innings throwing 7 strike outs in a row at one point. The Cardinals started a great charge getting Lucas Coan and Bonner Snyder on base but Carson Spiers snatched a line drive out of the air and tagged the runner for a great unassisted double play. In the top of the 2nd the Tigers got started with Jack McEvoy and Tudor Malik scoring to go on top 2-0. The top of the 3rd the Tigers again were able to get hits from Strausbaugh, Reeves, Spiers, Poplin, and Satterfield and a base on balls by Lister to get another 4 runs across the plate. The bottom of the 4th saw the Cards get 1 run across the plate with hits by Hudson and Snyder and a base on balls for Coan. In the 4th Will Taylor hit a double to right field to get things going again with Aubrie Lauderdale and Worth Gentry crossing the plate to get 3 more runs. Cardinals  7    Orioles 3
This game featured some fireworks: Two out-of-the-park bombs; 21 combined strike-outs. In the end, the Cardinals outscored the resilient Orioles by a score of 7-3.
GAME NOTES:
• Both home runs came in the 2nd inning. Facing two strikes and two outs in the top of the first, Cards leadoff man Devon Ciufo crushed a solo shot over the left field fence. Then in the bottom of the same frame, Benton Stillwell tagged his own solo blast well over the left-center fence.
• Aside from the dingers, this was a well-pitched game. Cards starter Will Robertson continued his roll, retiring 14 of the 16 batters he faced – including 10 Ks and 0 walks -- before being pulled with two outs in the fifth after his 58th pitch. Brooks Brady then came in for the Cards to record his fourth save of the season. For the O’s, starter Brandon Hood struck out 6 batters in 3 innings, while O's reliever Andrew Carter pitched shutout ball in the final two of his three innings pitched.
• The difference in this one came down to the Cards collecting more base hits and making fewer defensive errors. Robertson went 3-3 at the plate including a triple that short-hopped the center field fence. Brady bashed a triple and a double and scored 3 runs. Maddox Snow and Dixon Collins added base hits. In addition to his homer, Stillwell had a single in the sixth for the O’s, as did Hood, resulting in runs by Carter and Jake Mace to bring the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded. The rally fell short as Brady was able to get out of the jam with a game-ending K.

i guess when you mix green and blue, the result is "ugly".while i love and give kudos for the display of fortitude and heart, which in the end proved to be the difference, the journey along the way was not my kind of baseball. But, the games w/ the tigers this week were certainly fan-friendly and voice injurious. the only thing that can be stated w/ absolute certainty is that the tigers are neither bashful nor timid about hitting the white ball w/ laces

With the the go-ahead runs on 2nd and 3rd, clean-up slugger "Gill the Thrill" Sizer laced a hard grounder down the 1st baseline that was speared on a great scoop and tag by A's first baseman Sam Macfie, highlighting a spectacular 10-putout performance (4 unassisted!) by golden-glover "Slammin' Sammy."  With the game on the line in the bottom of the 5th, the A's broke through with 4 big runs with key hits by Read Perkins (3 for 4), and a clutch 2-RBI double by Edward Pollock, chasing home base-running daredevils Freeland and Slade. Cubs 10   Tigers 10   (Tie)
This game had everything going on for both teams. The Cubs came out and hit the ball hard to score 3 runs in the 1st and then the Tigers came right back to tie the game 3-3. Then the Cubs got going again adding 5 more in the 2nd. The battle continued when the Tigers came back in to bat scoring 4 runs to make the score 8-7 Cubs. The Tigers then held the Cubs scoreless and were able to get 1 run across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd to again tie the game 8-8. In the top of the 4th the Tigers allowed the Cubs to score 2 more runs with the Tigers getting a little sloppy with the ball playing throw and catch with each other and the Cubs doing a good job of running the bases. The Tigers were not able to do anything in the 4th but went out and held the Cubs scoreless in the top of the 5th. The Tigers were able to manufacture a couple of runs to send this into extra innings tied 10-10. The Tiger s then went out and got the Cubs 3 up 3 down to have a last ditch effort to pull one out in extra inning. The Cardinals improved their Majors Division leading record to 7-0 Saturday afternoon with a 13-2 win over the Tigers.

GAME NOTES:

  • Cards leadoff hitter Devon Ciufo opened the game with a first pitch triple, and scored one pitch later. That set the stage for another impressive offensive display by the Cards, who would get solid production from all parts of the batting order.  Brooks Brady scored two runs. Will Robertson went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple and 3 runs.  Maddox Snow went 3-4 with 3 RBI’s and 3 runs.  Matthew Davis and Phillip Bryant each recorded a 2-RBI single and each scored a run.  Taylor Carsten and Tom Kent added a single apiece.
  • Cards starting pitcher Will Robertson (1 HA, 7 K’s, 0 walks) stayed efficient on the mound, allowing only 17 plate appearances by the Tigers in 5 full innings of work.  The Cards defense once again provided exceptional support, with special recognition going to Taylor Carsten for his stellar catching debut; right fielder Tom Kent for robbing Allston Achille of a would-be triple in the second inning; and call-up Carson Spiers for triggering a sensational 4-5 double play in the fourth. Also special recognition goes to Cards iron man Dixon Collins, who played all 6 innings like a warrior despite suffering through nasty flu-like symptoms.
  • The Tigers defensive leaders included Ashton Hinton, who turned a picture-book 5-3 double play; 1 st baseman Enrique Cordoza, who made a nice running catch at the fence; and center fielder Rob Frazier and shortstop Evan Smith. Tigers batters collecting base hits were Smith, Frasher, and Will Thomas.
