Athletics 12 Cubs 2 |
The Cub's and A's met for the second time this season on a picture-picture Monday
afternoon at Timmons. After struggling through a mid-season slump, the A's offense
finally played up the level of the defense in a well-played game by both squads.
The A's brought their leather, shutting out the Cubs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings
and limiting them to 19 at-bats in this 4-inning contest. The A's bats were hot
early with leadoff man Read Perkins (1-3, RBI), Sam Macfie (1 for 2, RBI), Thomas
Whatley (2 for 2, 2 runs),and Tom Freeland (2 for 2, 3 RBI, HR) all reaching and
scoring in the 1st. The Cubs bounced back in top of the 2nd, led at the plate
by Merritt Grace (2 for 2) and by Matthew Mahaffey, Tieran Armstrong and Zach
Idris to cut the lead to 5-2. The A's put the game away in the bottom of the 3rd
with a 6-run outburst, highlighted by Tom Freeland's 2-run homer to the Pink Monogram
banner, winning him a monogramed bat bag in the Pink Monogram Home Run contest. Catcher Zach Idris was able to limit the damage with another great tag-out
play at home plate, his third this season against the A's. The A's Thomas Slade
(2 for 2, 2 runs) showed off his newly-found power swing and speedster Andres
Garcia got his mojo back with a hustling single and a run scored on a great 8th
batter slide into home. Despite grit and hustle by the Cubs, the A's defense then
held strong with key plays by SS Will Turrentine and 1B Sam Macfie to preserve
the 12-2 win. |

The Marlins and Tigers played a quality baseball game Monday night. The game
featured what most spectators would agree was the best all around game by two
majors teams this season. Of note were both teams' defenses, especially infield
defense. The Marlins defense featured Ramsey Stephenson (1B), Marshall Merline
(2B), Scottie Dickey (SS), Daniel Mullinax (C), and Marlins defensive player of
the game Grayson Stafford at 3B. Likewise, the Tigers defense of Enrique Cardoza
(1B), Rob Frasher (2B), Evan Smith (SS), Asheton Hinton (3B) and Alston Achille
(C) were impressive, led by Rob Frasher and Asheton Hinton. The game began with
hard singles by Marshall Merline and Daniel Mullinax of the Marlins. Neither runner
could score due to a combination of great Tigers defense and strong pitching by
Evan Smith. In the bottom of the first, Evan Smith hit a rocket to right center,
but was left stranded. The game was scoreless through 3 1/2 innings. In the bottom
of the 4th, the Tigers scratched for two runs on a combination of walks and a
Sam Jones hit. The Marlins answered in the top of the 5th with two runs of their
own. Marshall Merline singled and Daniel Mullinax walked. John Parke and Scottie
Dickey followed with singles to drive in runs. Neither team scored again in regulation.
In the top of the 7th, the Marlins got doubles from Daniel Mullinax, John Parke
and Ramsey Stephenson, and a single from Seth Lauderdale to put three runs on
the board. Daniel Mullinax closed the game to pick up the victory. Key offensive
players for the Tigers were Sam Jones 2-3, Evan Smith 1-3 2B, and Will Thomas
and Alston Achille with one hit each. Leading the way offensively for the Marlins
were John Parke 2-3 2B, Daniel Mullinax 2-3 2B, Marshall Merline 2-4, Ramsey Stephenson
1-2 2B, and Scottie Dickey and Seth Lauderdale with one hit each. |

In a game with plenty of bats, but short on gloves, the Cardinals were able to
hold off the visiting Tigers. After three innings the Cardinals held a 9 to 6
lead. The fireworks continued in the 4th with the Tigers posting 6 runs and the
Cardinals following up with 7 of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The
Cardinals held the Tigers scoreless in the top of the 5th and put up four more
runs in the bottom of the inning to take what they thought was a "comfortable"
20 to 12 lead into the 6th....but not so fast. The Tigers fought back and posted
seven runs in the top of the sixth to give all involved an elevated heart rate.
There is not enough room to mention all of the great hitting by both teams, but
the score reflects it. The Tigers Denton Knox, Jack Jopling, Matthew Ninneman
and Jack Strausbaugh all went 4/4 and the Cardinals AJ Quartararo, Will Williamson,
Reid Johnstone and Mark McEvoy were perfect at the plate. Great game of offense
by both clubs.....best of luck going forward. |

| The #1 Tigers played host to the O’s on a wet Thursday afternoon hoping to continue
their dominance, but the mighty O’s were up to the challenge. The offensive fireworks
got started early, with the O’s batting 6 batters, and scoring 2 runs. Lead off
hitter Robert Mace (3-4, 3 runs, 3B) started the inning by hitting a big shot
to center field, but was robbed of sure home run by a hustling Thomas Lister.
Then Matthew Carter (2-3, 3 runs, 3B) reached base on a ball to left field, followed
by a singe from Jay Davis (3-4, 1 run). Ashe Macfie (1 RBI) brought home Matthew
Carter with an RBI and Connor Whitlock (2-3, 2 RBI) brought home Jay Davis with
a RBI single for an early 2 run lead. Matthew Carter (6 K’s) then took the mound
for the O’s getting help from 2B Carter Powell and SS Connor Whitlock, with routine
plays to Jay Davis at 1B. Wes Reeves (1 Run, 1-1, 2B) scored a run for the Tigers,

O’s rally. Worth Gentry (1 Run, 1-1) started things off in the bottom of the 3rd
for the Tigers with a single, Wilson Strausbaugh (1 Run) hit a towering shot to
right field scoring Gentry, and Wes Reeves plated Strausbaugh with a RBI double
to right field of his own. With the momentum swinging towards the Tigers' direction,
O’s catcher Ashe Macfie threw a bullet to Andrew Vail at 3B preventing Reeves
from stealing, igniting the O’s confidence, and holding the Tigers to just 2 runs.
In the 4th the O’s managed base -oading walks from Carter Powell (1 Run), Chase
Achille (1 Run), and Rhett Baker (2 Runs). With 1 out and bases loaded, Robert
Mace laced a ball down the third base line for a 3 RBI triple to break the game
open and was also able to score on a single by Jay Davis to add 4 more runs in
the 4th for a 9-3 lead. Matthew Carter did it all in the bottom half of the 4th
sucking up a grounder for 1 out and recording 2 more strikeouts to hold the Tigers
scoreless. In the 5th the Tigers were able to keep the hot O’s from scoring with
great pitching from Carson Spiers and Neal Satterfield (1 K). In the bottom of

Tigers 11 Cubs 9 |
| On Thursday night at Timmons Park, the Tigers and Cubs played through intermittent
rain in one of the more exciting games of the season. Not even the rain could
cool off the Cubs hot bats as they cruised to an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the
2nd inning (Spiers scored 1, Ellison scored 2, Connor scored 2, Ford scored 1,
Keller scored 1, and Milligan scored 1). Just when you thought the Cubs had the
game safely in hand, the Tigers came to life. In the bottom of the 2nd inning,
the Tigers plated 7 runs to battle back and make it a game. In the top of the
3rd, Mackenzie Carter of the Tigers got a great break on a ball hit sharply by
Robert Borowicz of the Cubs making a difficult catch look easy in deep right field.
Later in the top of the 3rd inning with 2 outs and base runners at 1st and 2nd,
Rob Frasher made a diving catch in short center to end the inning and stop the
Cubs from extending their lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Tigers scored 2
runs to take a 9-8 lead into the 4th. The Cubs answered with a run in the top
of the 4th by Keller to knot the score at 9. In the bottom of the 4th, Evan Smith
stepped to the plate with the score tied and stroked an 0-2 pitch deep to right
field that carried over the fence for a two-run homer. With the Tigers leading
11-9, the game was called due to time. Offensively for the Cubs, Mac Ellison went
2-3 (2 runs scored), Jamie Connor had a triple (2 runs scored), and Jordan Ford

(2 2B, 1 HR), Allston Achille scored two runs and was awesome behind the plate,
Rob Frasher went 2-4 (Ground Rule Double), and Asheton Hinton's hustle was key
to ending the game in favor of the Tigers. |

The Tigers and Athletics met in the opener of their Saturday / Monday series
with the high-scoring Tigers (55 runs in last 3 games) challenging the A's tight
defense and struggling offense (averaging only 6 runs across last 4 games). The
Tigers charged to a fast 4-0 lead behind hard hits by Denton Knox, Jack Jopling,
Jack Strausbaugh and Sam Jones. The A's could only muster 2 runs in the 1st and
1 in the 2nd but their defense recovered from the 1st inning shock to shutout
the Tigers in the 2nd to trim the lead to 4-3 going to the 3rd. The A's bats then
finally woke up with firepower from Sam Macfie, Thomas Whatley, and a tape-measure
triple by Tom Freeland. Spanish speedster Andres Garcia then flew around the bases
behind clutch 2-out hits by Will Turrentine and Austin McCalla to post a 7-4 lead.
Those tough Tigers then rebounded in the home-half of the 3rd with Jopling, Strausbaugh,
Matthew Ninnemann and Brooks Lucas leading the 3-run comeback to knot the score
at 7-7. The A's power surge continued in the 4th behind hard hits and daring baserunning
by Whatley, Freeland, Jennings Huskey and Edward Pollock, plus a line-drive double
to left by Will Turrentine to post a 14-7 lead with 10-batter inning. The Tigers
squeezed home another run in the bottom of the 4th with Wilson Smith doubling
and being driven home by Jack Johnson, but the A's were able to put the game away
in the top of the 5th, behind clutch hitting by Austin McCalla and Julian Espada,
and rocket shots to LF by Freeland, Pollock and Turrentine, scoring 5 runs to
take the 19-8 win. Congratulations to both teams on a fun, fast-paced game - Stayed
tuned for the Monday afternoon encore when both teams hope to again light up the
scoreboard at Timmons! |

A well played, fast paced game between two good minors teams kept the fans on
the edge of their seats until the last out was made. Peyton Kinman started on
the mound for the A's and struck out three of the five batters he faced in the
top of the inning. The A's carried the momentum into the home half of the first
and scored two runs to take the lead. Bruce Stephenson and Kinman both scored
for the A's. Things could have been worse for the Tigers but shortstop Carson
Spiers made a stretching stab on a Weston McDonald rocket line drive to keep the
A's from doing further damage. The Tigers scored one in the second thanks to hits
from Tudor Malik, Thomas Lister and Will Taylor. After a rocky first, Wilson Strausbaugh
settled in and held the A's scoreless through the fifth inning, striking out seven
along the way. The Tigers scored four more in the top of the third to take the
lead. Chase Poplin walked and scored, Wes Reeves singled and scored, Spiers singled
and scored, Strausbaugh doubled and scored. McDonald came in for the A's in the
fourth and kept the Tigers scoreless for the rest of the game and recorded eight
strike outs along the way. Spiers relieved Strausbaugh in the sixth and managed
to pick up the save. The A's did make things very interesting in the sixth and
scored one run on hits by McDonald, Zach Cooter, Jake Dill, and Brooks Quattararo.
However good defense by the Tigers stranded the A's base runners and preserved
the win. Again, this was a well played game but two solid teams. |

On a beautiful day, the Cardinals continued to prove that if all their games
were scheduled for Saturday afternoon they might be at the top of the standings.
A game that started as a pitchers battle ended up a barnburner as the Cards were
able to hold off the Orioles 9-8. Cardinal starter Lucas Coan was in control by
shutting down the Os in the first two innings on 4 strikeouts and cruising to
a 2-0 lead at that point behind his own steal of home and an RBI from James Farish
to bring in Bobby Hudson. The O's bats woke up in the third, with Hayden Brown
and Robert Mace getting plated on a 2 RBI base hit by Jay Davis to tie the game
at 2. The Cards bounced back in the bottom of the frame with 4 runs coming from
eventual winning pitcher John Toohey, the Farish Brothers (James and Matthew)
and Max Englebardt on RBI from Gates Armstrong, Bonner Snyder and Hudson. The
Cards 6-2 lead was short-lived, however, when 4 Os came around to score in the
top of the 5th. Matthew Carter, Davis, Ashe MacFie, and O's defensive star of
the game Conner Whitlock all came around to score, with Whitlock picking up an
RBI and Andrew Vail knocking in 2. So with the score tied at 6, The Red Birds
came to bat in the bottom of the fifth. M. Farish led off with a walk, and with
one out Armstrong did likewise. M. Farish would score on a double by Bonner Snyder
but a great defensive play by the Os threw out Armstrong at the plate. With 2
outs, the Cards weren't done, however. Hudson hit a triple to the gap in left
center knocking in Snyder, and then Hudson scored the last Cardinal run on Coan's
RBI single, his third infield hit of the game. Snyder took the hill for the Cards
to try and shut the door on the Os, who had no give up in them. A triple by Carter
plated Mace, and then a single by Whitlock cut the Cardinal lead to one as Carter
scored. Snyder, in only his second appearance on the mound this season, gathered
himself with the tying and go ahead runs on base and was able to coax a strikeout
to end the game and pick up the save. The Cards are in action again on Monday
night against the Marlins, while the O's take on the A's Thursday night. |

The Cardinals broke open a close game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth,
securing with an 11-1 victory Saturday afternoon over the A’s. With the win, the
8-0 Cards reduce the magic number needed to clinch the Majors Regular Season Championship
to “1.”
GAME NOTES:
• Despite playing without their most experienced player and leader, the A’s showed
from the start that they were there to compete. With exceptional defensive plays
by shortstop Brian Poe, 3rd baseman Wallace Hendricks, 2nd baseman Mateo Carter
and others, the A’s were able to keep the score close most of the game. They also
hit the ball much better than the final score would suggest, with big base knocks
from Mason Simmons, Davis Callaham, and Moore Lockman.
• The Cards gloves proved equal to the task, making play after play to bail out
their pitcher, with special distinction going to center fielder Devon Ciufo, right
fielder Preston Hall, and 2nd baseman Taylor Carsten for their timely inspired
and timely defensive stops.
• The Cards fire-power with the bats ultimately prevailed. Devon Ciufo went 4-4
with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and 4 runs scored. Brooks Brady had a double, 2 walks
and a run scored. Will Robertson drilled two laser hits, one for a triple, and
delivered 5 RBI’s. Dixon Collins, Tom Kent and Preston Hall all added singles.
The highlight, though, was Matthew Davis’ fifth inning moon-shot over the left
field fence for a solo homer. |
