Rex Darnell is a native and resident of Travelers Rest and has been umpiring for over fourteen
years. He has officiated basketball as well as umpired for the ASA Slow and Fast-Pitch
softball leagues and the USSSA, before coming on-board with our Greenville Litttle
League. Rex grew up playing Little League, Middle School and High School baseball,
and was actually a teammate of GLL crew chief Benny Bishop on many fast-pitch
softball teams. (Makes you wonder how well those two got along with their umpires!)
Rex's love of baseball sparked his interest in umpiring and the thing he most
enjoys about his GLL umpire assignments is watching the kids have fun while learning
the game. Rex's favorite major league baseball player was Don Mattingly with
the New York Yankees, saying "Donnie Baseball" was a great hitter and fielder,
but most of all, was a "great sport."
Rex has a daughter Valerie and grandchildren Bryce and Kathryn, plus a "newly-arrived" granddaugher Emma,
and a son Jeremy who is a sportswriter and softball player among his other talents!
Rex is retired from UPS, and his hobbies include woodworking, landscaping, motorcycles
and golf (Not all at the same time, we hope.... Watch those fingers, Rex!).
When asked about the funniest thing he had seen or heard in umpiring, he said
they are "too numerous to list," but when asked to share his words-of-wisdom for us coaches, he recommends "Just shut up and play!" (And he says he has the T-shirt with this motto from his Basketball days!)
Sounds like great advice! Thanks, Rex, for sharing your time, talents, and your patience with the Greenville Little
League!
